How to copy a column in another as part of SEO?

Copying one column to another can be applied to a lot of things: here it is shown as part of the referencing by filling in the SEO fields.

We will explain how to quickly fill the meta tags in order to improve the SEO almost automatically, ie in mass on several products at a time.

The meta tags, for recall, are the meta descriptions, meta keywords, tag titles.

Most of the time to simplify life, we just put the name of the product in the title tag and in the meta description, the summary. This is an acceptable short cut.

It is of course possible to further improve SEO by making differentiated texts, but it is not critical at least at the beginning of the life of a site.

For this kind of operation, we will use MagicEdit and in particular the copy function from one column to another.

First example:

How do I copy the product name in the Title Tag field?

I display my column name, I display my column title. After selecting all the products, possibly several categories that interest me, I right click anywhere in the title tag column and I choose MagicEdit throughout the column (this will apply to all lines).

There was another choice "MagicEdit in all selected cells in the column" that would only apply to preselected lines.

MagicEdit opens with the previously used settings: I invite you to see first the video on vidéo sur MagicEdit if you do not know this tool well.

Click on the function: "Add the content of another column (line by line)" which changes to orange meaning that it is activated. Make sure that no other function is activated (not colored orange).

In the column field, choose the column you want to copy to the destination column. Here we want to copy the Name in the Meta description column so we choose "Name".

Some possible settings: checking Display means that you want to copy the value as it is displayed. This is useful when you copy, for example, the column Manufacturer Name. You can copy either the Name or the Manufacturer number. In this case, if the display is unchecked, the manufacturer number will be copied.

Then you can check "check in front" or "at the end": why? Because the copy content function does not overwrite the content of the cell, it copies it before or at the end of the content of the cell if it has one. In our case, the column was empty so it does not matter.

The addition separator is used to select the separator between the text that already exists in the cell and the one that is added. In our case, we do not put anything otherwise it will add something to us either before or behind.

Here is the add function is set and I do "Phase 1: Apply ...".

8 operations are performed which correspond to the 8 lines and the result can be seen on the screen (2). This allows you to check: if you do not like it or you have made a mistake you can do "Cancel changes", at this point nothing has been saved in your database.

If you are satisfied with the result, do not forget to save in the database (3) with the button "Phase 2: Save ..." and then close the window.

Here it is finished, my title tag column is filled with the product names. This is of course immediately effective in the base and your PrestaShop shop.

Second operation for the abstracts that I will copy in the column MetaDescription:

How to copy the product summary in the Meta description column?

There is going to be a setting in addition we will see why:

I proceed in the same way as previously, right click in the Meta description column, MagicEdit in all the selected cells of the column

I choose "add the contents of another column, in column I choose" Summary ", with the other settings as before.

But be careful, do not copy in the meta descriptions the formatting HTML present in the "summaries", as here the tags

. This is called HTML. We have the right to put HTML tags in the summary, we do not have the right to put in a meta description. So you have to convert this HTML to plain text.

Not to do, copy made to the identical, the HTML tags are copied with. It is not appropriate in a meta field:

To remove these HTML formatting characters, use the "Convert" function, in addition to the column copy function.

The "Convert" function converts text in lowercase, uppercase, in a different format etc. Here what we want is to convert HTM to plain text. It is the last proposal that should be checked: "HTML to text".

Reminder of what to do (both operations are performed at the same time):

We apply, 16 operations are performed (2 per line), and we see the result: we copied the abstracts without the tags (cleaned text). Do not forget to save and close the MagicEdit window:

Note that this column copy function works on all columns containing texts. For example, you can use it for meta keywords, but also in all other tables, including in the import window, to modify the read content of a csv or Excel file before importing.

Above, we simply copied one column into another. But you can also concatenate multiple columns in a single column. For example, to further enhance SEO, you can very well use MAgicEdit to add the name of the main category of the product, in front of the current content of the title tags.

Next week, we will show you how to mass import attributes into the PrestaShop database (or features, manufacturers, suppliers), without creating any combinaitions or products.
